Are there app-controlled storage unit locks?

Yes — and a phone can open one four different ways: Bluetooth, WiFi/platform, cellular, and battery-free NFC. Most run on a battery inside the lock, and several charge a recurring subscription fee. One category does neither.


This guide lays out all four for self storage, gives you the comparison table nobody else publishes, and answers what using one from an iPhone actually feels like. The Short Answer

An app-controlled storage lock — some write it app controlled storage unit locks — is any lock you open with your phone instead of a physical key or a dial combination. The Four Ways a Phone Can Open a Storage Unit


1. Bluetooth smart locks

The phone pairs with the lock over Bluetooth at close range. It is the most common consumer approach and works offline at the door. The catch is a battery inside the lock, and Bluetooth pairing can be slow or drop inside metal storage buildings.

2. WiFi / facility-platform locks

These are the systems built for operators who want to run a whole site from software — remote lock/unlock, tenant onboarding, overlock automation. Nokē ONE (Janus International) and OpenTech's INSOMNIAC SmartLock are the well-known names here.

A WiFi lock of this kind is capable, but two facts get buried. Both run on batteries — Nokē states a "2 year battery life," OpenTech a "6+ year" AA battery (janusintl.com; opentechalliance.com). And the management side usually depends on added infrastructure or a platform fee: OpenTech's cloud control runs over its OpenNet wireless mesh, and neither page publishes pricing.

3. Cellular locks

A few locks carry their own cellular radio, so they answer from anywhere without site WiFi. Convenient — but now you are powering a cellular modem from a battery, which shortens replacement cycles, and a data plan is part of the cost.

4. Battery-free NFC locks

The tenant taps a phone to the lock. The phone's NFC field transfers a small amount of energy that powers the lock long enough to authenticate and open — a technique called NFC energy harvesting. No battery lives in the lock, and no network is required at the door. This is the category KENRONE builds.

The battery nobody questions

The competing pages compete on whose battery lasts longer — two years, six years — but none of them ask whether a battery needs to be there at all. On a single unit that is a minor errand. Across a few hundred units it becomes a scheduled maintenance line: someone walks the site, finds the dead ones, and swaps cells on a rolling basis, forever. A battery-free lock removes the line item, not just extends it.

The price nobody prints

Every major competing page we reviewed routes you to "Contact Us," "Apply Now," or "Schedule a Demo" instead of publishing what the system costs. That pattern usually signals a per-door or per-month subscription fee. It is a fair model for some operators — but you should know it is there before you standardize a whole facility on it.

The honest takeaway: judge these systems on total cost of ownership, not sticker feel. Ask any vendor two direct questions — is there a monthly or per-door fee, and who replaces the batteries? The answers separate a one-time hardware cost from an open-ended operating cost.


"Will It Work With My iPhone?"

Which phones work. Every iPhone from the iPhone 7 onward has the NFC hardware needed, as do the mainstream Android brands (Samsung, Google Pixel, Xiaomi, and others). We tested 100 phones drawn from across the company — eight unlock cycles each — spanning most mainstream iPhone and Android models, so the compatibility claim is measured, not assumed.

First, clear up a myth

Having an NFC chip is not the same as being able to open the lock. A battery-free lock is not reading a passive tag — the phone's NFC field has to deliver enough energy to power the lock and pass authentication. So what matters is field strength and app support, not just the presence of NFC.

What it actually feels like is a deliberate three-step action, not a lock-screen background read:

1. Open the KENRONE app and tap the unlock button.

2. Hold the top or back of the phone against the lock body. NFC antenna placement differs by model, so if it does not catch the first time, shift the phone slightly and try again.

3. When you hit the right spot, the phone gives a short vibration and the lock opens in about 0.5 to 2 seconds.

Contact is close range: hold the phone against the lock, not hovering near it. You give up a wave-from-a-distance gesture, and in return the lock carries no battery and needs no signal.


When a Battery-Free NFC Lock Fits — and When It Doesn't

It fits when you want to erase battery maintenance across many units. It fits when parts of your site have weak or no signal, and when tenants open their own units and you want clean tenant access logs without a wiring project.
