The self-storage industry spent more than a decade trying to make electronic unit locks economical. The early powered systems failed on cost: miles of cabling, multiple power supplies, and battery backups made facility-wide deployment hard to justify.

The answer the market landed on was the battery-powered, on-door smart lock. It removed the wiring — but it moved the cost rather than eliminating it. Convert by turnover batch

Swap cylinders on vacant units first, then convert each unit as it turns over between tenants. No need to enter an occupied unit; mechanical and NFC run side by side during the rollout.

Provision in the cloud

Create tenants and permissions in the management platform. Each tenant's phone becomes their digital key at move-in.

STAGE 04

Operate remotely

Grant or suspend a unit's access permission, and pull its access history from the dashboard — without driving out. The unlock still happens at the door, by phone tap.

Retrofitting an active facility usually means entering occupied units to run cable or mount hardware, which risks tenant disruption and damage claims. A drop-in cylinder avoids that: you replace the cylinder when a unit is already vacant between tenants.

What "remote" does and doesn't mean: the operator controls authorization remotely — who is allowed to open the unit. The unlock itself still happens at the door, when an authorized phone taps the cylinder. There is no remote-open; suspending the credential simply means no phone can open that unit until access is reinstated.

Most operators already run a property management system (PMS) for billing, leasing, and delinquency. The access platform is designed to connect to that workflow rather than replace it.

KENRONE Cloud exposes a documented REST API and SDK, so access events and credential changes can be connected to your PMS or existing access workflow — for example, flagging a unit for overlock when billing marks a tenant delinquent.
