The short answer almost every guide gives — "buy a disc lock" — is correct, and it is also where most guides stop. A disc lock earns its reputation because its shackle is buried inside the lock body, leaving bolt cutters almost nothing to bite (Extra Space Storage). What the advice rarely tells you is how to judge one disc lock against another, which security claims are verifiable, and which part of your door is the real weak point.

The pattern is consistent: exposure decides everything. Every lock in the "low" rows shares one flaw — a shackle a tool can wrap around. Everything in the "high" rows hides or shortens that shackle.


On sizing: for a standard storage hasp, a 2¾-inch or 3-inch disc lock is the usual fit (Extra Space Storage). Facilities differ — some chains specify a lock type or supply their own — so confirm before you buy, not at move-in.


What Actually Makes a Lock Hard to Beat


Three properties do most of the work, and you can check all three before buying:

• Shackle exposure. How much steel can a tool physically grip? A disc lock's shackle sits inside the body; a closed-shackle padlock's is shrouded by shoulders. This is geometry, not marketing — you can see it in the product photo.

A vendor who can name a grade is telling you something testable. The Weak Link Nobody Checks: Your Hasp

Spend an hour on self-storage operator forums and a theme appears that is absent from every buying guide: for many facilities the vulnerable component is not the lock at all — it is the hasp welded to the door, to the point that experienced operators argue almost any reputable lock will do (SelfStorageTalk forum discussion).

It makes structural sense. A $25 disc lock can survive a bolt cutter, but if the hasp is thin stamped steel, spot-welded, or bolted through a single-skin door panel, the attack simply moves one component over. Before you upgrade your lock, spend thirty seconds checking:

• Is the hasp thick, continuous steel — or thin and stamped?

• Are the fasteners tamper-resistant, or ordinary bolts reachable from outside?

• Does the door panel flex when you pull the hasp?

If the answer worries you, that is a conversation with the facility, not a problem you can buy your way out of at the lock aisle.


Where Smart Locks Actually Stand

Storage-lock guides are unusually harsh on smart locks, and their objections are worth quoting rather than dodging. One warns that smart locks "may be easier to bypass or fail in extreme weather… generally not recommended unless they're verified as secure" (MovingPlace). Another lists the cons plainly: "Expensive / Vulnerable to hacking or technical malfunctions / Dependent on battery life and smartphone functionality" (Stor-N-Lock).

Those criticisms are fair — about the category they were written for. Both are describing Bluetooth locks, and every guide I found treats "smart lock" and "Bluetooth lock" as the same thing. They are not. The distinction matters because it changes all three objections:

The point is narrower — the standard objections to "smart locks" were aimed at a powered radio inside the lock, and a passive lock does not have one. Where the calculus genuinely flips is scale: a facility managing dozens or hundreds of doors, where keys get lost and access has to be granted and revoked, is solving a different problem than one renter with one padlock.
